about

Darren Guyaz’s music spans the gap between acoustic folk-rock and electronica, entwining deep, subtle beats, strong bass lines and ambient effects into the vivid, melodic lyrics and hauntingly beautiful harmonies ~ the threads that create the foundation of this album. Layering of rhythmic guitar riffs, keyboard accentuations and passionate vocals all converge in delivering a message and a sound that carries the listener into a space of self-reflection, connecting to their own story, their own experiences, their own life.

His lyrics weave the larger than life themes of love, loss and letting go into the stories of his early years, falling in love, the movement through the brambles of his own life and the inextricable fate that somehow binds us together in an intangible, beautiful way.

White Canvas interweaves the ethereal voice of Brittney Williams on several tracks, as well as percussion, bass, guitar and electronic effects by Geoff Stanfield of Well Recordings, the producer and recorder of this album. The album was mastered by Rick Fisher of RFI Mastering in Seattle, Washington.

about

I first began strumming on a friend’s guitar on an old homestead in the hills north of Missoula, Montana ~ though Seattle has been my home for the past five years. My lyrical, finger-picking music has metamorphosed from folk to electro-acoustic. I write about love, social justice, my early years, peace and the inextricable fate that somehow binds us together in an intangible, beautiful way. ... more

Track Name: Way Down, Way Up
Way down inside the dark caverns of your heart
aches for something more,
you know the way back home across golden
fields of unsung melodies

You are so beautiful when you open your eyes
and see what is real to you,
to me, the world sings for another day
as the moon rises high above the restless sea

Take my hand and let’s run as fast as we can,
we can jump over mountains and swim across oceans,
I know the space in between us is filled with sweet wishes,
you see we have very few chances to savor the dance
and be free

Way up high, higher than everything blue
you swim through the mythical, mythical waters of old,
young, love is the one thing that everyone needs to be free from the deepest abysses that kisses can’t touch

Go, fly, into the night, into the starlight of day,
say your prayer, say the passionate words
that you’ve been afraid, to say, to me, and to you
You are as strong as the wind

Take my hand and let’s run as fast as we can,
we can jump over mountains and swim across oceans,
I know the space in between us is filled with sweet wishes,
you see we have very few chances to savor the dance
and be free

Take my hand and let’s run as fast as we can,
we can jump over mountains and swim across oceans,
I know the space in between us is filled with sweet wishes,
you see we have very few chances to savor the dance
and be free

Take my hand and let’s run as fast as we can,
Take my hand and let’s run as fast as we can
Take my hand and let’s run as fast as we can
Track Name: Round and Round
The light of day is fading quickly now
And the world is slowing down
I’m looking in your eyes now
With nothing but love in my heart

And it’s time to say goodbye
Beneath this canopy of night
And I’m waiting for the time
When we can say hello again

And the world keeps spinning round and round
As the days turn into years
And the love that you have given me
Takes away my fear

The wind is speaking softly now
Whispering in my ear
It’s telling me not to worry now
Carrying away my tears

As you’re standing next to me
Beneath this wide and spacious sky
Constellations deep
In the melody of the night

The world keeps spinning round and round
As the days turn into years
And the love that you have given me
Takes away my fear
And the love that you have given me
Takes away my fear
Track Name: Beautiful World
When we decide to let go
We raise our glass to the wind
Then we surrender our hold
And we rise to the call of our kin

And we pray for a beautiful world
And we wait for the love that will cure

We all fall down to the earth
When we close our eyes to the rain
And we stand by the strength of our birth
When we breathe life into our pain

And we pray for a beautiful world
And we wait for the love that will cure
And we know that a faraway land
Is the same as a stone in the palm of our hand

When we look into the dream
We see the light before dawn
And we remember to be
Held by the dark that has gone

And we pray for a beautiful world
And we wait for the love that will cure
And we know that a faraway land
Is the same as a stone in the palm of our hand
And we pray for a beautiful world
And we pray for a beautiful world
For a beautiful world
A beautiful world
Track Name: Breathe
Just breathe, let it wash over you, let it all go,
it’s not worth holding onto anymore
In time, everything will pass you by,
everything will disappear,
nothing will remain behind

And you, you are so beautiful, you don’t understand
what you can give to the world
Maybe one day, you’ll begin to realize,
all of the illusions, that you created inside

Then you’ll see, that everything surrounding you,
isn’t what it seems,
Isn’t what’s been keeping you down, you down
It’s what you perceive,
it’s what you’ve been conditioned to,
It’s what you believe,
it’s how you relate to the world, the world

Just breathe and I sing, and I sigh and I say,
just breathe and I sing, and I sigh and I say
Just breathe and I sing, and I sigh and I say, just breathe
Just breathe and I sing, and I sigh and I say,
just breathe and I sing, and I sigh and I say
Just breathe and I sing, and I sigh and I say, just breathe

Just breathe, take in what will nourish you,
take in what you need, circulate throughout you
And feel, the element of oxygen, permeate your cells,
a transformation from within

And you, you are so beautiful, and everybody sees
how you light up the world
And every single day, as the clock of life keeps ticking on, everybody prays for such good fortune as you

Then you’ll see, that everything surrounding you,
isn’t what it seems,
Isn’t what’s been keeping you down, you down
It’s what you perceive,
it’s what you’ve been conditioned to,
it’s what you believe,
It’s how you relate to the world, the world

And you, you are so beautiful,
like a willow in a windstorm, humble and graceful
And today, with a deep inhalation,
feel the presence of new life,
from the element of oxygen

Just breathe…
Track Name: Dancing in the Rain
The only time I ever really saw her smile,
she was dancing in the sunshine
She wore a bright red dress that caught my eye,
caught my attention
Every single time she was by my side,
she never showed much emotion
But through all of the years she was in my life,
she was always in motion

When she was a girl, she would dance to
anything that would move her
She would often trust and let go of
anything that would inhibit her
She never was afraid of the words from
those that would judge her
She began to dream of a life as a beautiful dancer

The only time I ever really saw her fly,
she was dancing with the symphony
Gracefully beneath the glowing lights,
violins singing softly
Later that night she confessed to me,
she heard the voice of an angel
Telling her to always be free,
and to always be grateful

When she was a girl, she would dance to
anything that would move her
She would often trust and let go of
anything that would inhibit her
She never was afraid of the words from
those that would judge her
She began to dream of a life as a beautiful dancer

Dance, dance, she was dancing in the pouring rain,
when everyone was running for cover,
Dance, dance, she was dancing in the pouring rain,
she let go and put down her umbrella, and
Dance, dance, she was dancing in the pouring rain,
she turned to me, embraced each other, and
Dance, dance, she was dancing in the pouring rain,
she was dancing in the pouring rain

The only time I ever really saw her cry,
she was lying in a snowstorm
The driver never stopped at the blinking lights,
the doctor said she’d never dance again
From that moment on she was never the same,
she just stayed in her own world
She disappeared one cold and rainy night,
never again did I hear from her

Track Name: A Cold Wind Blows
The world holds on, and I hold on to,
to what I know and I hold on to you
Cause you see what I see and we can’t deny
That people around us are living a lie

I sit here, drinking my coffee
At a table, on the sidewalk at the café
And I am just watching people walk by
And I can see sadness, in their eyes

And a cold wind blows, over the mountain ridge
And a cold wind blows, touching everyone
And a cold wind blows, down the valley
And a cold wind blows, touching everyone

A man walks by, pony tail and three piece suit
He glances at me, beneath gray skies turned blue
And then in that moment, I realize
I understand that we’re all alike

And a cold wind blows, over the mountain ridge
And a cold wind blows, touching everyone
And a cold wind blows, down the valley
And a cold wind blows, touching everyone

We sip our wine, on the deck outside
And we speak of the state of the world
And then we remember that hope comes in waves
That thought lifts are spirits like that sunny day

And a cold wind blows, over the mountain ridge
And a cold wind blows, touching everyone
And a cold wind blows, down the valley
And a cold wind blows, touching everyone
Touching everyone
Track Name: White Canvas
Every weekday morn, for 45 years of his life
He got up and went to his job,
and said goodbye to his wife
And every single morning he wished
that he could be doing something else
And every single moment he dreamt of
doing what he loved to do

In his early years,
before he was told what he should do
He’d pick up his paint and a small white canvas
and rush on down to the water front
And every single time he would go there
he’d dream of who he wanted to be
And every single picture he painted
reflected the vision of a world he perceived

When he was a young man,
he joined the air force and went off to college
To follow the voice of his father’s commands
and let his passions slide further away
And every single painting he noticed
hanging on the walls of his life
And every single tear that he sheltered
held a passion that he denied

Today he turns 65,
he no longer drives down to the office
He stays at home with his wife,
and they spend their time close to the water
Every single morning he wakes
he goes upstairs to his large white canvas
And every single stroke that he makes
holds the light of a love long awaited
A love long awaited
A love long awaited
Track Name: Simple Things
The rain’s coming down with a clickety sound
on the roof over my head
A man on a motorcycle’s whizzing along
to the rhythm of the water droplets
And I wonder if he knows
that the water all around him
is the most that’s ever fallen at one time
And if he knows this is the truth,
does he make the correlation
with the fuel that’s fillin’ his tank

Take…..everything you know is true
And make…..one and one equal two
Then you’ll see…..that almost everything you do
Complicates…..the simple things that you knew

The steel’s climbing high above the Singapore sky
to a pace that just keeps on accelerating
They build lavish new resorts
with beaches that are imported
to appease the wealthy tourists on vacation
And I wonder if they know
that the concrete all around them
used to be a healthy jungle ecosystem
The only Tiger that you find is the aluminum kind,
a cheap lager that everyone’s drinking

The woman at the market is peddling her wares,
just trying to make an honest living
I notice her smile as I am walking by,
trying to sell me a piece of clothing
And I wonder if she knows
that the shirt that I am wearing
costs as much as her monthly wages
And it’s probably made in China
for under five dollars,
the price I paid was just outrageous

Take…..everything you know is true
And make…..one and one equal two
Then you’ll see…..that almost everything you do
Complicates…..the simple things that you knew
Track Name: Sandhill Crane Lullaby
Here in this place, in the wilderness of my life
The river flows by as it always will
And my love for you flows like the river,
and it always will

As this day passes by
And night falls slowly down, around my melody
And my love for you
sings like the spring wind on the valley floor

Take my love, and hold it in your arms
And hold it to the sky,
like a thundercloud holds the rain
And let it pour down, over the landscape of your life
And nourish everything,
everything that needs to grow

As darkness surrounds, the forest of my fears
I hear the haunting cries
of two sandhill cranes above my head
And my love for you,
soars on the wings of their majesty

The wind begins to howl over the mountain ridge
It fills the emptiness of my dark and quiet world
And my love for you swirls like the wind
around the space you fill

Take my love, and hold it in your arms
And hold it to the sky,
like a thundercloud holds the rain
And let it pour down, over the landscape of your life
And nourish everything,
everything that needs to grow
Track Name: Toss of a Stone
Last night I dreamt I was young again,
I was riding my bike
down the dead-end street next to my house,
my brother by my side
I remember we were laughing
and riding as fast as we could
I remember nothing could stop us,
we were holding the world in our hands
holding the world in our hands

In this dream nothing seemed to matter,
just like it used to be
we explored the trails through the woods
next to our house, and we stopped by the creek
and we talked of our dreams
and what we could be when we grew up
we threw stones into the water
and we watched them sink
and we watched them sink

I awoke with the next stone my brother tossed,
it shattered my dream
And I lay there quiet in my bed in my house,
three thousand miles away
And I recalled when I understood
he was different than anyone else
space grew between us and I hated him
and I hated myself
I hated myself

Many miles and years have passed between us now,
and I’ve reconciled my past
every year he comes to visit me in Montana,
every time we joke and we laugh
we go exploring the roads through the mountains
and the roads of our lives
And we stop at the lakes and the rivers
and we stop to see
stop to see who we’ve become
